About
Safe space for BIPOC women who have experienced a miscarriage, abortion, and/or stillbirth
The Melanin Project's longest recurring program, My Sistah & Me. holds space for self identified Black women who have silently suffered with pregnancy loss via miscarriage, stillbirth, and/or abortion. Prior to the pandemic, our storytelling circles were in the form of private dinners in Brooklyn, NY. Today, our program is a combination of digital and in person events that continue to utilize the power of community, storytelling, and yoga to offer a unique space for powerful transformation.
Our
Services
my sistah & me.
The pandemic pushed us to explore alternative ways to better support our community members. Since March 2020, we've added tremendous value and crafted a truly unique space that can be appreciated by our members both virtually and in person
Our in person and virtual sessions include journaling, transformational storyteling, and yoga with My Sistah & Me. creator Stephanie Pierre. What makes the space extra special, is that it also features Black women therapists and holistic healers at each session for further support. Every woman that attends then receives a discount to the featured service provider for continued care.
Our
People
Our story began in 2017 in the home of a dear friend who helped us host a dinner party for 10 women we knew personally experienced pregnancy loss by miscarriage, stillbirth, and abortion. Our dinners became public in 2018
Target Audience
Our guests are self identified Black women between the ages of 19 - 64 who've experienced an abortion, miscarriage, stillbirth or a combination of all three. Many of our guests are formally educated or currently in the pursuit of higher education. These sistahs are mothers, entrepreneurs, artists, and corporate professionals of varying socioeconomic backgrounds.
Opportunities
Our community and its needs are very unique. There has never been an exclusive space created specifically for the emotional and spiritual health of Black women who have experienced reproductive trauma. Self identified Non Hispanic Black woman have the highest infant and maternal mortality rate than any other ethnic group and face the brunt of social stigmas related to reproductive rights. Our innovative approach to community health promotion disrupts the antiquated methods of the existing market and is in step with the global call for increased racial equity. My Sistah & Me. is pioneering the future of culturally competent healing spaces.

Words from A. Sistah
"If you felt alone during your pregnancy loss you won't feel alone at this dinner. There was a sense of community that was formed among strangers who all had a relatable experience. No one was there to judge or criminalize my body - all were there to offer support which was much appreciated. You do not have to deal with this alone, there are other women with your story and other women who need to hear your story to remove themselves from the sense of solitude and trauma they have been feeling."

Words from A. Sistah
"I was fortunate enough to be invited to attend the inaugural pregnancy lost dinner hosted by the Melanin Project and Stephanie. I was hesitant to attend because I didn’t know what to expect. Once I got into the room all my fears dissipated and I was met with a calm, welcoming environment. I was with other women who had experienced the pain of losing a pregnancy or the pain of having to make the decision to abort a pregnancy. I was in community and I felt seen and held. It was the first time that I could freely talk about my abortion without feeling judged. Attending the pregnancy loss dinner was an important step in my healing process. I am forever grateful."
